Who We Are

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington is dedicated to the principles of free religion in the Bluegrass, a tradition that goes back almost 200 years. UUCL is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

We are a free, liberal, progressive church open to all persons.  We welcome all without regard to race, creed, age, economic status, physical ability, gender expression, or sexual orientation.  These are some of the categories that have divided rather than united people of faith.  We do not require that you believe the same as us.  Indeed here you will find many different paths.

Our (Brand New) Vision Statement

(Approved at congregational meeting on Apr. 11, 2010.)

We are building a caring community,
open to all, that treasures free thought,
joyful celebration, lifelong learning,
and generous service.

Our Current Mission Statement

(We are starting the process of revising this based on our new Vision Statement.)

The mission of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington is to give expression to the liberal religious convictions and to serve the religious needs of its members and friends through worship, religious education (or exploration), fellowship, and service.

These four aspects of church life were adopted in 1989-90 as the “Four Pillars” of our church life, and are represented by four of the banners that grace our Great Hall (sanctuary).

Worship Banner. Wing & star. Religious Education banner. Tree & acorn. Fellowship Banner. Dancers and circle. Service Banner. Hands & heart.

Visit our Banner Page for more on these banners, and other banners created by UUCL member Barbara Steinrock.

Our Covenant of Community:

We, the members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington, Kentucky, covenant to:

  • Relate to each other with caring, courtesy, and love

  • Respect each other's individual search for truth

  • Support our church community as we are able, with our presence, our financial resources, and our labor

  • Support and participate in the greater Unitarian Universalist community

  • Challenge each other to spiritual growth in the living tradition of our shared faith

  • Respect the earth, which is the source of our sustenance and our children's sustenance

  • Support each other as we advance peace, justice, and liberal religious expression

  • Nurture and respect our children as they seek their way in the world

We further pledge to lovingly remind each other of this covenant that we solemnly, and in sacred communion, have made.
