Environment Task Force:  Green Sanctuary Program

Weaving respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

We are a Task Force that strives to increase awareness of sustainable living concepts within our congregation and the community at large. We meet monthly.  Everyone is welcome to join or just visit. For information on the Denominational Green Sanctuary Program visit: www.uuministryforearth.org

UUCL has almost completed the process of becoming a Green Sanctuary!

At our Congregational Meeting on on May 22, 2011, UUCL members voted unanimously to support our application for Green Sanctuary status!
Our goal in this program was to integrate sustainable living concepts in all activities of our church. UUCL was the first church to participate in the PRIDE of the Bluegrass Waste Busters program. Some of our steps towards Green Living include:
~ use recycled paper
~ recycle paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, steel, and cardboard
~ use regular flatware and china
~ avoid using chemicals on our grounds or in our building
~ use earth friendly cleaning supplies
~ teach our children and adults about sustainable living practices
~ visit conferences, events, and churches
~ partner with Jim Embry’s Sustainable Communities
~ partner with GreenLex,  GreenLex.org
~ offered monthly informational sessions about gardening by Kitchen Gardeners of the Bluegrass and John Walker
~ toured Community Supported Agriculture at Terrapin Hill Farm in Harrodsburg www.terrapinhillfarm.com
~ sponsored The Second Julia Butterfly Hill session at the Lexington Library in September 2006
~ initiated an external energy audit performed by Kentucky Utilities, after which the church installed energy-saving devices and reduced costs
~ held an Environmental Justice Festival and Trunk Sale in 2009.  This event increased awareness of environmental issues, and provided an opportunities to reuse and recycle items people no longer needed.
~ recently implemented its Johnny Appleseed Project, which uses the apple trees on UUCL property as a resource to feed those less fortunate.  The harvest from these trees was donated to God's Panty and other emergency food agencies.
